Other than some bits of cork and a severed Imperial Knight head, that was really it for the build customisation – the rest was all in the painting. I eventually figured things out by adding a small, weak pair of magnets in the right wrist – there is a bit of a seam visible as a result, unfortunately, but it’s not that noticeable and the trade-off of being able to field any Bloodthirster was worth it. The only real difficult part was lining up the Insensate Rage Bloodthirster’s two-handed axe, as the shoulder pieces wrap around the model’s biceps making having just the shoulders magnetised an impossibility. I built a frame inside the model’s torso out of sprues, green stuff and magnets, then put an opposed magnet into the shoulder socket of each arm. In the end, it wasn’t too hard to line the parts up, however. I still haven’t got round to painting the other weapons besides the whip and one-handed axe, hence the old WIP photo. I’d successfully magnetised some models before, but these were usually angular, flat-planed tanks or walkers – it was an interesting challenge to see if I could magnetise the options of a more organic, dynamically posed model.

What I did do, however, is muck about with magnets a little bit. The Bloodthirster is almost unique in my army in that I built it entirely by the book – other than the fact that I used the double-bitted axe head from the Wrath of Khorne build, the model received no kitbashing work whatsoever. Self-flattery aside, let’s talk about the model in a bit more depth. I’m aware that this is now just rambling vanity, but I’m really, really proud of this one.Īnyways. The techniques I test-drove on my Bloodletters worked spectacularly and arguably even better on the ‘Thirster’s muscled physique, my attempts at upscaling my power weapon effect on the axe went well, the skulls are spot on. But I really think this is my best work overall so far – everything came together near-perfectly to create exactly what I was going for. I’ve painted plenty since this model, and many of them are bigger, more detailed, better in terms of technique, and so on.

This is my Bloodthirster (of Unfettered Fury, to give him his full name). Check the main article for statistical changes.I’ve been looking forward to writing about this one. This only refers to cosmetic changes to the Gladiator.
